A Guide to Hookah Smoking

!±8± A Guide to Hookah Smoking

The slow and relaxed experience of smoking a hookah, which includes preparation of the hookah and the tobacco, is the whole point of hookah smoking. It's not about a buzz or a nicotine fix, it's about the relaxed space, among friends and out of time, that is created by the hookah and the act of smoking it. Typically, a hookah smoking session lasts somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes.

After carefully preparing a clean hookah with cold water, selecting a flavorful tobacco for the bowl, lighting and adding the charcoal, the aromatic hookah smoke is drawn bubbling through the water. Cooled and softened after being filtered by the water, light, pleasant smoke infuses the senses, lingering on the air, encouraging slow meditative breathing and sweetening conversation, games of dominoes, or quiet contemplation and study.

Some techniques used to enhance the experience of hookah smoking are adding ice to the water and chilling the hoses beforehand. The lush fruit flavors of hookah smoke can be heightened by the addition of fruit juice or wine to the water in the base, and both customers and proprietors of hookah smoking lounges regularly combine tobacco flavors to come up with their own special blends.

Some tips and warnings given by veteran smokers include the following: always use the proper charcoal, specifically made for hookah smoking-regular charcoal briquettes cause carbon monoxide poisoning, and charcoal which isn't low-smoke will overwhelm the hookah smoke; only a very small amount of hookah tobacco is needed in the bowl, since a little goes a long way; if the smoke or flavor are lacking, it's probably because the coals aren't hot enough-when smoking for more than half an hour or so, fresh coals will be needed.

Because hookah smoking is, and has traditionally been, a social activity, the etiquette which attends it is important. Some of the rules of etiquette are never to light cigarettes using the charcoal that heats the hookah tobacco; avoid blowing smoke in the face of another person unless they ask--so they can taste the flavor being smoked; since the point of the individual plastic mouthpiece is health and safety, don't share them; when one person is done smoking but the hookah is still in use, setting a hose directly on the table signifies that smoker is finished and another person may use the hose; when a hookah smoking session is completed, the hoses should be wrapped around the stem; finally, don't smoke anything but tobacco out of a hookah.

The Best Types of Electric Smokers in the Market

!±8± The Best Types of Electric Smokers in the Market

Smoking is a process of cooking food by applying steam, usually from burning wood. Meat and fish are the two most common foods being smoked. This is healthier without the need for oil.

While maintaining the basic premise, manufacturers now introduced electric smokers. Instead of burning woods, this appliance emits steam or smoke to cook foods.

Most electric smokers have temperature controls and adjustment controls vital for cooking meat or chicken perfectly. Several electric smokers also have automatic heat generators. Some types of smokers are charcoal, wood, electric and gas.

Listed below are some types of electric smokers that are available in the market:

The Brinkmann Gourment Electric Smoker is completely painted in two colors; such as black and red. It has 1500 to 1600 watt heating elements. It has a unique thermometer and front hinged door for adding water easily.

The Old Smokey Electric Smoker has a drum shape. It is completely made from aluminum. It also comes with two water pans and a rack. It is the cheapest electric smoker. Its produces heat the same way an electric oven does. It has a thermostat control and a flat top. The juice emitted from the meat drips back down to keep the food flavorful.

The Char-Broil Electric Water Smoker has a 1650 watt heating element duly controlled by a thermostat. It has a wooden handle. It can be converted into an electric brazier. Although the process of smoking using this appliance is rudimentary, this model can cook flavorful meats. It is one of the most affordable you can find in the market.

The Meco Electric Smoker 5029 and is made from stainless steel. It is a great cheapo starter smoker. It can be easily added with chunks, chips or pellets, along with its doors on its side. The Cookshack Electric Smoker has an adjustable temperature control from 150 to 300oF. The sealed design is perfect for smoking meat, chicken or other foods, except for vegetables.

The Electric Water Smokers has a vertical electric smoker design that can attract the attention of consumers. The water pan helps control temperature and keeps the smoking process of meat or fish moist.

The Cabela's Premium Vertical Smokershas all the whistles and bells you need in order to take on your turkey or meat smoking project. It has 8mm steel assembled components, powder coated for a tougher fish. John McLemore's "Dadgum That's Good!"

!±8± John McLemore's "Dadgum That's Good!"

Ever since the backyard barbecue crowd discovered the turkey fryer and got hooked on it's ability to produce a juicy tender turkey in 45 minutes or less, they have longed for a turkey fryer that could be safely used indoors. Their dreams were answered when the McLemore family teamed up with one of the best known turkey producers, Butterball, and produced the now famous Masterbuilt 20010109 Butterball Professional Series Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer.

With the enclosed burner and absence of open flame this fryer is ready to go to work for you indoors. It even has a filter to help eliminate odors. This electric fryer is not only convenient and clean when used indoors but it actually uses up to 30% less oil. The thermostatically controlled electric heat source keeps the oil at the proper temperature without constant monitoring. Capable of handling up to a 14 pound turkey this fryer will also allow the home cook to serve up such tasty treats such as fried potatoes, fried sausage, seafood including shrimp and lobster and other easily prepared treats.

With the included cooking basket you will find your family demanding more of your homemade doughnuts, onion rings, french fries and other foods that will keep the kids at home for meals and not down at the local fast food store.

The fryer is has a stainless steel outside shell and a porcelain-coated fry pot. A combination of red and green "power on" and "ready" lights along with a simple thermostat control knob make this appliance simple to use and safe for use in your kitchen or enclosed sun room. Bring the fryer where the company is and you won't have to spend hours toiling away in the kitchen while everybody else is enjoying the company.

To get you quickly on the right path to perfection with this appliance, John McLemore whose family manufacturers all the Masterbuilt products has written the, "Dadgum That's Good!", cook book that describes over 125 recipes including smoking, grilling, frying, boiling and steaming. John's appearance on the popular Mike Huckabee Saturday night show wowed the audience when he produced a fully fried turkey, new potatoes, sausage, shrimp, vegetables and even fried Oreo cookies all during the one hour show.

If your not sure you are ready for your own electric or gas turkey fryer perhaps getting a copy of John's book, "Dadgum That's Good!" will help you make a decision. Even with out the turkey fryer you could put the recipes in his book to good use especially during the upcoming holiday season.

The Top 5 Smokers

!±8± The Top 5 Smokers

While it's true that you can do a darn good job of smoking food on a regular gas or charcoal grill (I still do it today) there is nothing like having a smoker. There are a few different types of smokers available. Let's take a look.

The Water Smoker

It's also referred to as the Bullet, looks something like R2D2 from Star Wars. Its cylindrical shape is small and convenient for the average barbecuer. It has a charcoal fire or electrical heating element at the bottom, a water pan (to add moisture to the food) just above that, then the space for the food of choice to be smoked on top. You add soaked wood chunks to the fire for the smoke. It is challenging however, to hold a consistent temperature. Otherwise, the Water Smoker does a fine job.

The Electric or Propane Box Smoker

You could confuse this smoker with a dorm-sized refrigerator. This box-like smoker has the heating element on the bottom with racks above it for the food. Smoke is provided by adding wood chips in a special drawer near the bottom of the unit. Some higher end models automatically add the wood chips or pellets for you. It's much easier to achieve and hold a consistent temperature with this type of smoker. Some models even have a digital heat setting available. This also does a good job.

Off-Set Barrel Smoker

This type is my choice in smokers. A fire box holds the charcoal or wood for heat. This box is to either the left or right side and slightly lower of the main part of the unit. This design assures that the food being prepared does not come in contact with the flame. The smoke travels from the fire box across and under the food and out a small chimney which is on the opposite side of the smoker. The main idea in true barbecue is "low and slow", and this design is perfect for that.

Now that you know a little bit about smoker design, let's take a look at my recommendations for good values in smokers.

Brinkmann Gourmet Charcoal Smoker

The Brinkmann Gourmet Charcoal Smoker my choice for a great starter smoker. Its attractive price makes it a true value. I personally have one of these beauties and I love to use it. Its bullet design has two cooking levels for very good capacity. It will make a true barbecuer out of you.

Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker

Weber has consistently produced truly wonderful grills for many decades. They offer the bullet design Smokey Mountain Charcoal Smoker in two sizes. The 18.5 inch is small and compact, perfect for a situation where space is limited. The 22 inch model is a wonderful smoker unit. They both are constructed with the same high quality craftsmanship and materials that are the backbone of Weber products.

Masterbuilt 30″ Electric Smoker

This box-smoker design is great for smoking any types of food. From ribs to briskets, you can do it all with this unit. It has many great features and is priced right. You can't go wrong with the Masterbuilt Smokehouse Smoker.

Bradley Digital Electric Smoker

The Bradley Smoker has a digital time/temperature/smoke control. You don't have to babysit this smoker, it does all the work for you. Just set it and forget it (although it wouldn't hurt to check it once in a while). It has 4 racks for plenty of ribs, chicken or brisket. It's a great value for the money.

Char-Griller Smokin' Pro

With the Char-Griller Smokin' Pro off-set barrel design, you will be the envy of the neighborhood. This smoker is my choice for "best buy". Its cavernous main area is capable of holding 100 lbs. of meat. How's that for big? If you're really into smoking and true barbecue, this is the smoker for you.
